Job description

The Workshop Manager is responsible for ensuring effective workshop management, planning, and achievement of daily and monthly Workshop targets.

The incumbent will ensure that maintenance and manufacturing orders are delivered from the business unit to the regions on time, with the right quality, and at a competitive cost.

The incumbent will further develop and implement an engineering solution or strategy that will help the company achieve its strategic objectives and those of Provest clients.

The key responsibilities include the following:

  • Manage the allocation, maintenance, and repair of all equipment at the different operational sites/business units.

  • Track and minimize wastage and overuse of consumables and other materials.

  • Identify and optimise new business development opportunities in conjunction with the Business Development Department, i.e., General Engineering Services.

  • Plan, direct, and grow the workshop operations according to the strategic goals of the company.

  • Assist the Logistics Coordinator in managing and overseeing the maintenance of trucks.

  • Manage the budget, internal supply management, and cost control of the business unit.

  • Coordinate with the procurement section/department to ensure availability of spares and consumables.

  • Monitor Service Level Agreements with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) in respect of subcontractors.

  • Adhere to contractual agreements of different clients in relation to service provision.

  • Oversee the execution of Workshop operational plans and objectives.

  • Compile reports on Workshop stock levels and equipment maintenance.

  • Analyse cost reports on spares, maintenance, repairs, and make recommendations on cost-saving measures.

  • Effectively lead, guide, and direct the Workshop staff to ensure that they understand the strategic direction of the workshop.

  • Drive compliance with ProVest safety systems and ensure a safe and healthy working environment.

  • Continuously seek innovative ideas to reduce the operational cost of the Workshop.

  • Enforce compliance with safety and general rules of the Workshop.

  • Maintain asset register for Workshop items or tools.

  • Ensure honest and ethical workmanship on all repairs and services.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential:

  • Grade 12 Certificate.

  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or related field.

  • Relevant Engineering Trade Certificate (preferably, Millwright, Diesel Mechanics, or Auto Electrician)

Advantageous:

  • Certificate in Maintenance Management.

EXPERIENCE

Essential:

  • 5 - 10 years' experience in a mining or heavy industry.

  • Maintenance, assembling and fabrication experience.

Advantageous:

  • Knowledge of construction and underground secondary support
  • Experience in Engineering Workshop management and field repairs, and maintenance.

  • Knowledge and experience of the SAGE ERP system or a similar ERP system.

  • Previous experience as a GES or Engineer.

TECHNICAL/MANAGERIAL SKILLS

  • Good understanding of support equipment and machinery (shotcrete, drilling machines, croppers, grout pumps, tensioners, etc.).

  • Proficiency in the interpretation of mechanical designs and drawings, fabrications, and construction of any items.

  • Mining/ Plant operations management.

  • Budgeting, Financial and Business Acumen.

  • Ability to manage own time, schedule work, and plan output.

  • Safety, Health, and Environmental Management.

  • Systems optimisation and management.

  • Effective breakdown management.

  • Computer literacy – Excel, Word, Microsoft Office.

PHYSICAL/LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Medically fit
  • No criminal record
  • Driver's license
